The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecasted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the coming days. On December 24, regions such as Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, Cuddalore, and Puducherry are expected to experience isolated heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms. The following day, December 25, will see thunderstorms and lightning over various areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with other regions receiving lighter to moderate rain.
In response to these weather conditions, the RMC has issued a third-level cyclone warning for seven key ports in Tamil Nadu: Chennai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Ennore, Kattupalli, Puducherry, and Karaikal. The cyclonic circulation forming near the southwest Bay of Bengal, close to the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts, could intensify weather disruptions over the next few days, bringing additional rainfall from December 26 to 28.
While these rains provide some relief from the intense heat, authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant. The recent impact of Cyclone Fengal in late November, which caused widespread destruction, including 12 fatalities and extensive damage to agricultural land, highlights the need for preparedness as the region faces another challenging weather pattern. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and advising precautions.
As Tamil Nadu and Puducherry prepare for the upcoming rains and cyclonic conditions, authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure public safety. The weather department continues to issue alerts, advising fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea and urging residents in affected areas to stay indoors during severe weather events. With the region still recovering from the damage caused by Cyclone Fengal, the continued vigilance of local governments and communities will be crucial in mitigating the impact of these storms. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and take necessary precautions to safeguard life and property.
