Actor-turned-politician and Tamil Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is set to lead his first major political protest, focusing on the ongoing struggles faced by Tamil Nadu’s fishermen. The demonstration, planned in Cuddalore, aims to demand a permanent solution to the recurring issue of Indian fishermen being abducted by the Sri Lankan Navy. While an official announcement is yet to be made, TVK has already sought police permission for the protest. This marks a significant step in Vijay’s political journey, as he transitions from issuing statements and making occasional visits to protest sites to directly leading a demonstration.
The abduction of Tamil fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy over alleged maritime border violations has long been a contentious issue. Despite repeated appeals by the fishing community to both the DMK-led state government and the BJP-led central government, a lasting resolution remains elusive. Vijay’s protest is expected to intensify pressure on both administrations to address the fishermen’s grievances.
This move comes on the heels of TVK’s recent Women’s Day protests across Tamil Nadu, where the party criticized the DMK government for failing to ensure women’s safety. Although Vijay did not participate in those protests, he released a strong statement supporting the cause. His decision to personally lead the fishermen’s protest signals a more active and hands-on approach to his political activism.
Sources reveal that after the Cuddalore protest, TVK plans to mobilise fishermen statewide and potentially call for a strike to amplify their demands. Vijay’s increasing political involvement is being closely monitored, as he positions himself as a leader unafraid to challenge both state and central governments on critical public issues.
