Former MLA and long-time CPM leader A Padmakumar has announced his decision to step down from all elected positions within the party. The 66-year-old leader, who has been a member of the CPM’s Pathanamthitta district secretariat, clarified that his resignation is voluntary and not due to any ideological differences with the party. He emphasized that his decision was made ahead of the party’s standard retirement age of 75.
Padmakumar stated that he remains committed to the CPM’s political ideology and has no major issues with its organisational structure. However, he highlighted the importance of selecting individuals with strong political awareness and organisational knowledge for higher committee roles. “I have always believed that those elevated to key positions must possess a deep understanding of the party and its functioning,” he said.
Padmakumar also addressed his future role, expressing his willingness to continue working at the local level if permitted by the party. He dismissed speculations about joining another political party, stating, “My political journey began during the Emergency, and I did not join the CPM for committee positions. There is no question of switching parties now.”
CPM state secretary M V Govindan responded to Padmakumar’s remarks, asserting that his actions do not pose a challenge to the party. However, sources suggest that the CPM may take organisational action against Padmakumar for publicly criticising the party, particularly his objections to the inclusion of Minister Veena George in the state committee.
Padmakumar’s recent Facebook post, which read, “Betrayal, deception, and humiliation,” has sparked discussions about his discontent. Despite his resignation, both Congress and BJP have expressed interest in welcoming him if he decides to leave the CPM. Padmakumar, who has served the party for over five decades, remains a district committee member but has chosen to step back from higher responsibilities.
