West Bengal Introduces New Safety Measures for Women, Limits on Night Shifts

The West Bengal government has introduced new safety measures to protect women working night shifts, particularly in state-run hospitals. These measures include the creation of designated retiring rooms and CCTV-monitored ‘safe zones.’ The initiative comes amid protests by doctors following the alleged rape and murder of a medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

To further enhance safety, the state has launched the ‘Rattirer Sathi – Helpers of the Night’ program, which will extend to hostels and other places where women work night shifts. A mobile application with alarm devices will also be developed to allow women to quickly contact local police in emergencies. Additionally, night police patrols will be established, and workplaces are encouraged to maintain a balanced ratio of male and female security staff. Where possible, the state recommends avoiding night shifts for women.
