Due to persistent heavy rainfall, authorities in Kerala have declared a holiday for all educational institutions in the districts of Kottayam, Kollam, and Idukki for Saturday. The directive comes from the respective District Collectors, taking into account safety concerns amid worsening weather conditions. This closure applies to all educational facilities including Anganwadis, summer vacation classes, tuition centres, sports and art training camps, and religious education centres. However, examinations already scheduled for the day will proceed without disruption.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert across all districts in Kerala, predicting heavy rainfall ranging between 7 and 11 cm within a 24-hour period. While the intensity of rainfall may reduce slightly according to the latest updates, the forecast still warns of significant showers.
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has also sounded alerts for moderate rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and gusty winds of up to 50 km/h in several districts including Kottayam, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Adding to the concern, rising water levels have been reported in several major rivers. Authorities are closely monitoring the Manimala and Achankovil rivers in Pathanamthitta, the Meenachil in Kottayam, the Korapuzha in Kozhikode, and the Kabani in Wayanad. People living near riverbanks have been advised to remain cautious and follow official guidance to ensure safety.
