The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert in four districts of Kerala today, signaling the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall. The districts under alert are Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. According to the IMD, these areas may receive rainfall ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period, which qualifies as heavy rain.
This weather development comes as the southwest monsoon has officially arrived over parts of the southern Andaman Sea, northern Andaman Sea, southern Bay of Bengal, and Nicobar Islands as of yesterday. In the coming three days, the monsoon is expected to spread across southern Arabian Sea, the Comorin region, Maldives, additional parts of the southern Bay of Bengal, and all of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, along with the remaining areas of the Andaman Sea and central Bay of Bengal.
As Kerala closely watches the progress of the monsoon, today’s yellow alert emphasizes the need for caution, especially in the alerted districts. While widespread heavy rain is not forecasted, localized strong showers may still cause disruptions. The public and local authorities are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and be prepared for possible sudden weather changes.
Residents in the alerted districts are urged to exercise caution, especially in areas prone to waterlogging, landslides, or flash floods. Fishermen and those involved in coastal or marine activities should pay close attention to weather updates and avoid venturing into the sea if advised.
