Kasaragod: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts across Kerala, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in several districts over the next few days. A red alert has been declared for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, with rainfall expected to exceed 204.4 mm in the next 24 hours. District Collector Inbasekar K has announced a holiday for all educational institutions in Kasaragod on Tuesday, December 3. This applies to schools, tuition centres, anganwadis, and madrassas, but model residential schools will remain operational.
As per the IMD’s latest forecast, Kasaragod will be under an orange alert, signifying very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. Rain or thundershowers are likely across Kerala until December 7, accompanied by squally winds reaching speeds of 35-45 kmph, gusting up to 55 kmph along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.
The intense rainfall is expected to disrupt daily life, causing reduced visibility, traffic congestion, waterlogging, and power outages. Vulnerable areas may face landslides or mudslides, and standing crops and mature vegetables could suffer significant damage. Lightning activity also poses a risk to people and animals outdoors.
Authorities have urged residents to adhere to traffic advisories, avoid vulnerable structures, and secure agricultural setups. Staying updated on weather warnings and seeking shelter during thunderstorms are also recommended for public safety.
