The Indian Air Force (IAF) has stepped up its efforts in Wayanad, deploying advanced technology to assist in the ongoing landslide rescue operations. On Saturday, the IAF airlifted one ZAWER radar and four REECO radars from Siachen and Delhi to enhance search capabilities in the disaster-affected areas.
According to a post on social media platform X, “#IAF helicopters Mi-17V5 and ALH continue their relentless efforts in Wayanad, with daring winching rescue by ALH from Sulur. Additionally, on the request of the state government, one ZAWER and four REECO radars from Siachen and Delhi have been airlifted by AN-32 for deep search missions. Essential services recovery is underway.”
Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan highlighted the ongoing challenges and the coordination between central and state agencies. “We are at a loss of words. This is an hour of crisis, an hour of tragedy. All our focus is on rescue and relief. So far, all the bodies have not been recovered. Wayanad presented a very brilliant example of the coordination between the central government and the state government,” he stated. Governor Khan also mentioned the need for future rehabilitation of displaced individuals.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), Indian Army, and Indian Air Force (IAF) demonstrated remarkable coordination and bravery on Saturday, successfully rescuing three personnel stranded at Soochipara Waterfalls in the landslide-hit Wayanad district. During a combing operation along the river banks, the ICG team spotted the stranded individuals and promptly reported their location. A combined land and air rescue mission led to their safe retrieval.
As of the latest update, the landslide, which struck on July 30, has resulted in 308 fatalities in Chooralmala and Mundakkai. Kerala Health Minister Veena George reported that 215 bodies and 143 body parts have been recovered, including 98 males, 87 females, and 30 children. Post-mortem procedures have been completed on 212 bodies and 140 body parts, with 148 bodies identified by relatives.
