The recent landslide in Wayanad has left an entire village in devastation, with search teams working tirelessly to find survivors and recover deceased individuals. The disaster has brought together service personnel, volunteer organizations, and ordinary citizens in a unified effort to address the crisis.
The scale of the tragedy is immense. Rescue workers face heartbreaking scenes daily, with many still missing and others buried under layers of mud. Children trapped in the debris have been rescued with ropes, while approximately 400 fire service personnel are actively involved in the operations. Prajilal, Assistant Station Officer at Neyyattinkara Fire Station, described the situation as “more terrifying than a battlefield,” noting the overwhelming scenes of destruction and moments of helplessness.
Three teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), each consisting of 30 members, have been working at the site. The team from Meenangadi was the first to arrive, led by Commandant Akhilesh Yadav. They cleared the route to Mundakkai and rescued stranded individuals using ropes. The team’s efforts extended to Punjirimattam, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos. Team member Vaishakh described the experience as particularly distressing, especially when encountering bodies of children.
Forest officials also played a crucial role in the rescue operations. Over ninety forest department personnel, led by South DFO (Wayanad) Ajith K. Raman, were among the first responders. Beat Forest Officer Sajin recounted a dramatic rescue operation where a family was saved from Attamala forest using the jeep’s headlights after being alerted by a local teacher.
The emotional toll on the rescuers is profound. Havildar Saju shared the grim reality of finding unrecognizable body parts and the tragic discovery of two children who were found dead holding each other. Havildar Sharath Lal recounted the heartbreaking moment of finding a semi-conscious 30-year-old woman who could only utter the desperate plea for her buried two-year-old daughter, underscoring the tragic scale of the disaster.
The rescue operations continue with heavy hearts, as the community and responders grapple with the enormity of the tragedy.
