Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala’s Education Department has introduced new directives to ensure that school study trips are inclusive, allowing participation regardless of students’ financial backgrounds. The circular, issued as part of a New Year announcement by Education Minister V. Sivankutty, emphasizes affordability and fairness in planning such activities.
Schools have been instructed to limit the costs of study trips to a reasonable amount that all students can afford. It explicitly prohibits excluding children based on their inability to contribute financially. Teachers are advised to handle cases where students participate free of charge with confidentiality, ensuring no child feels singled out. Additionally, students will not bear the expenses of teachers or PTA members accompanying them on trips.
The circular also discourages extravagant personal celebrations, such as birthdays of teachers, staff, or students, within school premises. If such events are organized, they must not impose a financial burden on parents or children.
These guidelines extend to CBSE and ICSE schools as well. Complaints about hefty charges for study trips and instances of schools collecting money for teacher gifts have highlighted the need for such measures. The new directives aim to create a more inclusive and equitable environment, safeguarding students from financial discrimination while promoting community spirit in schools.
