The Kerala government has announced an extension for the distribution of January’s ration, allowing beneficiaries to collect their supplies until February 4. This decision, confirmed by Food and Civil Supplies Minister GR Anil, ensures that all eligible households receive their entitlements despite initial logistical delays.
Ration Shops to Close for Stocktaking on February 5
Following the extension, all ration shops across the state will remain closed on February 5 for mandatory stock verification. The distribution of February’s ration will begin on February 6, ensuring a smooth transition into the next month’s supply cycle.
Majority of Beneficiaries Have Collected Rations
According to official data, as of 5 PM on January 30, approximately 68.71% of ration cardholders (2,23,048 individuals) had already collected their food supplies. On January 29 alone, 2,51,795 people accessed their rations, highlighting an active distribution process.
Transport Strike Initially Disrupted Supply Chain
The door-to-door delivery of food grains faced some disruptions due to a transport contractors’ strike earlier in the month. However, the situation has been normalized, and distribution has proceeded without issues for the past five days. The Civil Supplies Department has assured the public that all ration shops have sufficient stock to meet demand.
Minister GR Anil urged all beneficiaries to collect their pending January rations before February 4 to avoid inconvenience. He also confirmed that combination billing will continue in February, allowing for flexible distribution based on stock availability in ration shops.
