Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government is set to acquire plantation land in Wayanad to establish townships aimed at rehabilitating those affected by the devastating landslides in Mundakkai and Chooralmala. With delays in receiving central government funding, the state will initiate the rehabilitation process using resources from the Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund (CMDRF).
The proposed townships will be built in Kalpetta and Meppadi, with plans to construct approximately a thousand homes alongside essential amenities such as schools and healthcare facilities. The exact amount of land to be acquired is still under evaluation, and a final decision will be made after thorough surveys of the affected areas.
In addition to government efforts, the Kerala government will also seek contributions from political parties, corporate entities, and various organizations in the form of homes, educational institutions, and other vital infrastructure. Wayanad district’s Minister, O R Kelu, assured that rehabilitation efforts in the region will not be delayed. The government is fully committed to providing timely assistance to those displaced by the landslides and ensuring the rapid development of these townships. This project underscores the state’s commitment to long-term rehabilitation and community rebuilding for disaster victims in Wayanad.
In addition to these measures, the government plans to ensure that the new townships are sustainable and resilient, offering a safe environment for the victims to rebuild their lives. Special emphasis will be placed on modern infrastructure, proper healthcare facilities, and education to provide a comprehensive living space for the displaced families. Authorities are also exploring the possibility of creating livelihood opportunities within the townships to help residents regain economic stability.
