The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for various parts of Kerala, warning of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reaching speeds up to 40 km/h. Districts such as Kollam and Alappuzha are expected to experience these weather conditions in the next few hours, with similar warnings extended to Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
Simultaneously, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has raised alarms over the possibility of a Black Sea phenomenon, leading to high waves and coastal erosion. Specific coastal stretches are expected to see wave heights between 0.2 to 0.8 meters on May 16, 2025, impacting areas like Kappil to Pozhiyur in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappatt to Edava in Kollam, Munambam to Maruvakkad in Ernakulam, and Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty in Alappuzha. Additionally, parts of Kanyakumari are also under a similar alert.
Authorities have urged fishermen and coastal residents to remain highly vigilant. Safety guidelines include:
- Avoiding all sea-based activities, including beach tourism.
- Refraining from launching or docking small boats during high tide or rough sea conditions.
- Safely anchoring fishing vessels and maintaining proper spacing to prevent collisions.
- Keeping away from dangerous coastal zones due to the risk of sea erosion.
All residents and travelers are advised to follow official instructions closely and remain indoors during periods of intense weather activity.
