Thiruvananthapuram: In a significant development, the Kerala government has authorized the Kerala State Beverages (Manufacturing & Marketing) Corporation Ltd (BEVCO) to export Indian-made foreign liquor, beer, and foreign liquor to Lakshadweep. While alcohol is banned across the Lakshadweep Islands, this move specifically caters to tourists visiting Bangaram Island. There will be no retail sales of alcohol to the local population.
The decision came following requests from the Lakshadweep Tourism Agency, which highlighted the challenges of sourcing liquor from other states for tourism purposes. BEVCO, which typically supplies liquor to licensed outlets such as bars, clubs, and military canteens within Kerala, is now permitted to export the products to Lakshadweep under special provisions.
Liquor will be transported from BEVCO’s Ernakulam godown, though alternative routes, including Beypore port, may be considered for logistical reasons. However, the Excise Commissioner is required to issue a special order amending current regulations for transporting alcohol, as permits are generally limited to local sales. Furthermore, tax-related complications concerning export fees and excise sales taxes must be addressed before finalizing the shipments.
This export initiative aims to support Lakshadweep’s growing tourism industry, offering visitors access to alcohol while respecting local cultural restrictions on the islands. The plan represents a careful balance between tourism promotion and local regulations, with the necessary legal amendments expected to follow soon.
