
Thiruvananthapuram: India mourns the loss of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister and a towering figure in Indian politics, who passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92 at AIIMS Delhi. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan joined a chorus of tributes, emphasizing his commitment to secularism, democracy, and transformative economic reforms.
Chief Minister Vijayan lauded Dr. Singh’s lifelong dedication to upholding the principles of democracy and secularism, which earned him respect across political divides. Highlighting his tenure as Finance Minister, Vijayan credited Singh for introducing economic reforms under the Narasimha Rao government, marking a pivotal shift in India’s economic trajectory. Despite criticisms from various quarters, including the Left, Singh handled ideological differences with maturity and grace.
V D Satheesan hailed Dr. Singh as a visionary economist and the only Congress Prime Minister, after Jawaharlal Nehru, to serve two consecutive terms. His contributions, from NREGA to RTI and farm loan waivers, underscored a commitment to progressive governance and humanity.
