A tragic aviation incident has claimed the lives of 38 individuals after an Azerbaijan Airlines flight crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday. Speculation has arisen in foreign media about a possible Russian missile strike being responsible for the accident. Investigators found external holes and scars on the aircraft’s tail, which resemble damage typically caused by missiles.
Flight J2-8243, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, was en route from Baku to Grozny in southern Russia when adverse weather conditions forced the pilot to divert. The flight crossed the Caspian Sea and sought emergency landing clearance at Aktau Airport, Kazakhstan. However, the plane nosedived just 3 kilometers from the airport. Miraculously, 29 of the 62 passengers and 5 crew members survived and are undergoing treatment. Survivors recounted hearing an explosion before the crash.
Some reports suggest that the Russian Pantsir-S1 air defense system may have mistaken the aircraft for a Ukrainian drone amid recent drone strikes near Grozny and Chechnya. However, Russian authorities have dismissed such claims, attributing the crash to a bird strike.
Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have initiated independent investigations, and the aircraft’s black box has been recovered to provide clarity on the incident. Meanwhile, questions remain about why the flight disappeared from radar for some time before reappearing to attempt an emergency landing.
