Kasaragod: The recent fireworks accident at the Veerarkavu temple in Nileshwar, Kasaragod, has now claimed four lives, as another victim succumbed to injuries on Sunday night. The deceased, 19-year-old Shibinraj from Cheruvathur, passed away while undergoing treatment at a Kozhikode hospital, with his death confirmed around midnight. The tragic event also led to the loss of two other lives on Sunday, with Ratheesh from Kinanoor and Biju from Nileshwar both succumbing to severe injuries while hospitalized. On Saturday, another victim, Sandeep from Choyamkode, lost his life due to critical burns sustained during the accident.
The catastrophic incident took place last Tuesday at approximately 12:15 am during festivities at the temple. According to reports, a spark from a firework triggered an explosion in a makeshift storage area adjacent to the temple wall, where a large stockpile of firecrackers was stored. The powerful blast injured over 150 people, many of whom were families with children gathered to enjoy the celebrations.
Following the accident, legal proceedings have been initiated against those responsible. Initially, three individuals associated with the temple—the committee’s president, secretary, and the individual who ignited the fireworks—were granted bail by the Hosdurg First Class Judicial Magistrate. However, a subsequent review by the District Court led to the revocation of their bail as investigations into the accident continue. The tragedy has prompted calls for stricter safety regulations regarding fireworks storage and handling, especially during large public gatherings.
This unfortunate event has raised serious concerns about safety protocols during temple festivals, emphasizing the need for authorities to enforce more stringent measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
