Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared the onset of the northeast monsoon over Kerala following the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon. As a result, an orange alert has been issued for Malappuram and Kannur, with predictions of very heavy rainfall ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. Additionally, ten other districts, including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam, are under yellow alerts, with expected rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm.
Moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is anticipated across the state, with the IMD forecasting widespread rain and thundershowers until October 21. A wind advisory has also been issued, warning fishermen against venturing into the sea until October 19 due to squally conditions with wind speeds reaching up to 55 km/h along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coast.
Coastal districts are under a swell surge warning until October 16, with red alerts for Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram, where waves are expected to reach heights of 1.0 to 2.0 meters. Other districts are under yellow alerts for the same swell conditions.
The IMD cautions the public about the probable impacts of heavy rain, which include waterlogging, flash floods, landslides, power outages, and damage to structures. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, ensure safe shelter, and be cautious of lightning hazards. Farmers are urged to postpone sowing activities to prevent water stagnation.
