In a significant step towards promoting sustainable energy and eco-friendly transportation, the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has introduced subsidies for solar panel installations and electric vehicles. The initiative aims to encourage more residents to switch to solar energy and adopt electric mobility, reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
As part of the scheme, homeowners can avail a subsidy of ₹10,000 for installing solar panels. Additionally, subsidies ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 are available for electric vehicles, including private electric scooters, taxis, and auto-rickshaws. However, the exact subsidy amount is yet to be finalized and will depend on specific criteria set by the Corporation.
To qualify for the subsidy, buyers must ensure that their solar panels or electric vehicles are purchased from government-approved companies. This initiative is complementary to existing programs such as the central government’s ‘Surya Ghar’ scheme and the Kerala state government’s ‘Kiran’ scheme, both of which focus on increasing renewable energy adoption.
In addition to providing financial incentives, the Corporation has also announced a special provision for families below the poverty line (BPL), offering them solar panels free of cost. This move is expected to benefit economically weaker sections by reducing their electricity expenses while contributing to a cleaner environment.
By launching these initiatives, the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation is taking a proactive approach to green energy adoption and sustainable urban development, ensuring that more residents benefit from clean energy solutions while promoting environmental conservation.
