Thodupuzha: A devastating road accident in Idukki claimed the lives of three people, including the sister of Olympian KM Beenamol, after their jeep lost control and plunged into a 100-foot-deep gorge at Panniyarkutty on Friday night. The victims were identified as Boss (55) and his wife Reena (48), both residents of Idayodi, Panniyarkutty, and Abraham (50). Reena was the sister of Olympian KM Beenamol, while Abraham was the father-in-law of KM Binu, Beenamol’s brother.
The accident took place around 10.30 pm near the new bridge at Panniyarkutty. Boss and Reena were returning home after visiting relatives in Mullakkanam when their jeep lost control near Panniyarkutty Church and veered off the narrow, steep road, plunging into the deep gorge. The area is known for its treacherous terrain and challenging road conditions, making it a high-risk zone for accidents.
Following the accident, local residents and fire force personnel launched a rescue operation, retrieving the injured victims from the wreckage. The three were immediately rushed to Adimali Taluk Hospital for emergency medical care. However, Boss and Reena succumbed to their injuries on the way, while Abraham passed away during treatment in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The bodies have been kept at Adimali Taluk Hospital for post-mortem procedures. The tragic accident has shocked the local community, with many urging authorities to improve road safety measures in the hilly region to prevent future tragedies.
