Veteran Malayalam actor T P Madhavan, who graced the silver screen with his versatile performances for decades, passed away at the age of 88. He had been battling stomach ailments and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital. Madhavan, who appeared in over 600 films, was known for his diverse roles in Malayalam cinema. He was also the first general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), contributing significantly to the film industry off-screen as well.
Madhavan had spent his later years at Gandhi Bhavan in Pathanapuram, Kollam, where he had been residing for the past nine years. Before settling there, he had briefly left the film industry and lived in Haridwar, where he collapsed due to health issues. Upon his recovery, he returned to Kerala and found solace at Gandhi Bhavan. Thanks to the assistance of serial director Prasad, he later returned to acting in a few serials when his health improved.
Born in Thiruvananthapuram to N P Pillai, a respected academic, and Saraswathi, Madhavan came from a family with strong intellectual and artistic roots. His first film role was in the movie “Raagam” (1975), and his contributions to Malayalam cinema earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Ramu Karyat and Prem Nazeer awards.
Despite his early career in fields like journalism and advertising, his passion for acting led him to devote his life to films, often at the cost of his personal relationships. He is survived by his son, noted Bollywood director Raja Krishna Menon, and his daughter Devika. T P Madhavan’s funeral will be held at Shanthikavadam in Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow, marking the end of a long and celebrated life in Malayalam cinema.
