There is growing speculation that K Sudhakaran, the president of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), may soon be removed from his position due to increasing internal conflict within the party. Sources suggest that All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Deepa Das Munshi is likely to recommend restructuring the KPCC after engaging in discussions with senior party leaders and assessing the current situation. Sudhakaran has reportedly agreed to step down without resistance if advised to do so by the high command, acknowledging that the party’s current environment is not conducive to his leadership.
The discord between Sudhakaran and Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan is seen as a key factor destabilising the party, with the two leaders failing to present a unified stance on crucial issues. Tensions rose over Satheesan’s handling of organisational matters, especially regarding preparations for the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections. Satheesan, who was dissatisfied with the criticism of his initiatives, also contributed to the cancellation of a joint press conference. Despite this, the leadership has yet to make a final decision about Sudhakaran’s removal or election-related arrangements.
In response to the mounting challenges, Sunil Kanugolu, who is assisting Congress with its election strategy, has proposed potential names for the next KPCC president. These names have been shared with the high command, with considerations for maintaining communal balance. Possible successors to Sudhakaran include Adoor Prakash, Benny Behanan, Sunny Joseph, Anto Antony, M.M. Hassan, and Kodikunnil Suresh, each of whom brings different strengths and leadership qualities to the table. The high command is expected to make a decision after careful evaluation of the situation.
