In a significant reshuffle within the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), the Congress high command has announced the removal of K Sudhakaran from his post as KPCC president. He has been appointed a special invitee to the AICC Working Committee. The new KPCC president is Sunny Joseph, a seasoned Congress leader and MLA from Peravoor in Kannur. This change comes after a long period of speculation regarding the leadership in Kerala Congress, with Sunny Joseph stepping into the role 24 years after he first succeeded Sudhakaran as Kannur DCC president in 2001.
Apart from Joseph’s appointment, there have been several other key changes. Adoor Prakash, MP from Attingal, has been appointed as the UDF convener. In addition, three prominent Congress leaders—MLAs PC Vishnunath, AP Anilkumar, and MP Shafi Parambil—have been designated as working presidents. This restructuring aims to strengthen the party’s leadership ahead of future electoral challenges.
Sunny Joseph, who defeated CPM’s influential KK Shailaja in his 2011 assembly debut, has secured consecutive victories in the 2016 and 2021 elections, solidifying his position as a strong leader. In a statement, K Sudhakaran expressed his support for the new appointment, acknowledging that he had expected the change, and welcomed Sunny Joseph’s leadership, highlighting the need for new energy within the party. Sunny Joseph, in turn, humbly stated that he was grateful for the trust placed in him, but expressed his doubts about whether he would be able to fill Sudhakaran’s shoes entirely.
This reshuffle signals a strategic move by the Congress to rejuvenate its leadership structure in Kerala, reflecting the party’s efforts to stay competitive and dynamic in the state’s political landscape.
