In Kanguva, Suriya takes audiences on a journey through two contrasting timelines, 2024 and 1070, playing two distinct characters: Francis, a bounty hunter in modern-day, and Kanguva, a fierce protector from the past. The premise—how these two lives intertwine across centuries—is promising, but the film, directed by Siva, struggles to leave a memorable impact. Suriya’s dedicated performance shines, yet he is let down by a script that lacks originality and depth.
The opening sequence lacks the punch needed to draw viewers in, especially in the modern-day storyline, which feels formulaic. Siva leans on predictable elements like a glamorized heroine (Disha Patani), comic interludes by Yogi Babu, and familiar Tamil cinema themes. Although the shifts between past and present attempt to build intrigue, the story feels thin when it all connects, failing to offer anything beyond a surface-level experience despite Suriya’s intensity.
The film excels in technical areas, notably in cinematography by Vetri and the impactful score by Devi Sri Prasad, both of which highlight the beauty of the village setting and intensify battle scenes. However, while the 1070 timeline is more compelling, it still lacks the depth to elevate the narrative. Suriya’s scenes, especially an intense fight sequence with a CGI alligator, aim to showcase Kanguva’s strength, though they feel slightly disjointed as his prowess has already been established.
