Gareth Southgate has announced his departure as England manager following their recent defeat to Spain in the European Championship final, marking his final game in charge after six years at the helm. Southgate, who took over in 2016, guided England through 102 matches, achieving notable successes such as reaching the World Cup semifinals in 2018 and the Euro finals in 2021 and 2024.
“After Sunday’s final against Spain, it’s time for change and a new chapter in my career,” Southgate stated in a heartfelt announcement. “Managing and representing England has been the honor of my life. I’ve given everything to this role, and leading these players has been a privilege.”
