In a heartbreaking turn of events for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), persistent rain in Hyderabad ended their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 playoff hopes as their crucial 55th league match against Delhi Capitals (DC) was abandoned due to an unplayable outfield at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Monday. The match, part of the 18th edition of the tournament, was halted shortly after the completion of Delhi’s innings and eventually called off.
With the washout, both teams received one point each, but the outcome was a major blow to SRH, who needed a full two points to stay in contention for the playoffs. This result mathematically eliminated them from the tournament, joining Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals as the teams out of the playoff race. DC, on the other hand, still has a fighting chance with 13 points from 11 games.
Earlier, SRH skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bowl. Delhi’s top order crumbled early, managing only 26/4 at the end of the powerplay. Karun Nair, Faf du Plessis, Abhishek Porel, and Axar Patel all fell cheaply. KL Rahul scored 10 before being dismissed by Jaydev Unadkat. Despite the rough start, Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma rescued the innings with a 50-run partnership. Stubbs remained unbeaten on 41 (36 balls), while Ashutosh made a quick 41 off 26 before getting out in the final over.
Delhi wrapped up their innings at 133/7. Pat Cummins led the bowling attack with an economical spell of 3/19, supported by Unadkat, Malinga, and Harshal Patel, who each claimed a wicket.
Unfortunately, the downpour that followed made further play impossible, leaving SRH’s campaign quite literally washed away.
