Trump Administration Offers $1,000 Incentive for Voluntary Self-Deportation

New DHS Program Promotes Cost-Effective Return of Illegal Immigrants via CBP App

In a significant move aimed at curbing the costs of immigration enforcement, the Trump administration has introduced a new program that provides a $1,000 stipend and full travel assistance to undocumented immigrants in the United States who voluntarily return to their home countries. Announced by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the initiative will be operated through the CBP Home App, allowing users to arrange their departure and receive assistance efficiently.

According to the DHS, any individual residing in the U.S. without legal status who chooses to self-deport via the app will qualify for financial support upon confirmed return. This strategy is expected to cut deportation-related costs by nearly 70%, compared to the current average expense of $17,121 per case involving arrest, detention, and removal.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the initiative as a safer and more economical alternative to forced deportation. The program comes as part of Trump’s broader immigration crackdown and is positioned as a tool to boost enforcement outcomes without the legal and diplomatic challenges of mass deportations.

At a rally in Michigan, former President Trump highlighted his early-term immigration successes, including tougher enforcement and increased removals. However, experts from institutions like Brookings have pointed out that deportation numbers remain below expectations and expressed concern over the humanitarian and legal implications of the administration’s policies. Critics argue that although Trump’s approach appeals to a segment of voters concerned about border security, it lacks due process protections and has created fear and uncertainty within immigrant communities.
