
Wilmington, Delaware: During the Cancer Moonshot event held in Wilmington, Delaware, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to combating cervical cancer through a generous support package worth USD 7.5 million. The package will fund the distribution of sampling kits, detection kits, and vaccines to countries in need, with a focus on addressing cervical cancer. Modi’s announcement aligns with his broader vision of ‘One Earth, One Health,’ emphasizing global collaboration in healthcare.
The Cancer Moonshot, an initiative led by the White House, aims to intensify the fight against cancer through coordinated efforts involving federal agencies, private companies, and healthcare organizations. Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the importance of this collaboration and expressed gratitude to President Biden for organizing the event, underscoring the significance of making healthcare accessible and affordable worldwide.
India has made significant strides in its battle against cervical cancer, launching a cost-effective screening program and developing its own vaccine. Modi also highlighted the country’s advancements in integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into new treatment methods. He further pledged India’s readiness to share its expertise, knowledge, and resources with the global community, emphasizing that cancer care requires a multifaceted approach—prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment.
In addition to the USD 7.5 million pledge, Modi announced that India would contribute 40 million vaccine doses to Indo-Pacific countries under GAVI and QUAD initiatives. He also committed to supporting radiotherapy treatment and capacity building, reinforcing India’s role in the global fight against cancer. The Prime Minister noted that India’s largest health insurance scheme, along with special centers providing affordable medicines, reflects the country’s commitment to equitable healthcare.
The event built on the US-India Cancer Moonshot Dialogue, which took place earlier in August, fostering greater collaboration in biomedical research and global health solutions.
