US President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 with mild symptoms on Wednesday. This follows his recent statement about considering dropping his reelection bid if diagnosed with a severe medical condition.
The 81-year-old Democrat cut short a campaign trip to Las Vegas and isolated at his beach home in Delaware, expressing gratitude to well-wishers and affirming his commitment to continue working for the American people.
The infection coincides with a crucial period for Biden’s campaign, especially after a poor debate performance against Donald Trump raised health concerns and prompted some Democrats to suggest he step aside. The situation is further complicated by the recent assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally.
Biden canceled a speech to a union representing Latino workers, although he attended a campaign event and gave a radio interview earlier. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that Biden, vaccinated and boosted, is taking Paxlovid and continues to perform his duties in isolation.
White House doctor Kevin O’Connor noted Biden’s mild symptoms, including a runny nose, cough, and general malaise. Despite these symptoms, Biden’s vital signs remained normal.
During a phone call with Unidos union president Janet Murguia, Biden expressed his disappointment at missing the afternoon event. Attendees expressed confidence in Biden’s recovery despite his diagnosis.
Concerns over Biden’s age and health have been growing, especially following his recent debate performance. In an interview with BET, Biden mentioned he would reconsider his candidacy if diagnosed with a severe medical condition.
Biden’s illness coincides with mounting pressure from within his party. Representative Adam Schiff of California urged Biden to “pass the torch,” citing concerns over Biden’s ability to defeat Trump. ABC News reported that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer suggested Biden stepping down would be better for the country, although Schumer’s spokesperson downplayed this report.
Biden’s campaign used his illness as a fundraising opportunity, criticizing Elon Musk and wealthy individuals attempting to influence the election. Musk recently declared his support for Trump following the assassination attempt.
Despite Biden’s insistence on Democratic support, an Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll revealed nearly two-thirds of Democratic voters want him to step aside.
