Philadelphia: In a high-stakes U.S. presidential debate held in Philadelphia, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump traded sharp blows on issues ranging from race and women’s rights to the economy and national security. As the only scheduled debate ahead of the November 2024 general election, it offered voters an up-close view of both candidates’ stances.
Kamala Harris used the platform to emphasize her record of defending fundamental rights, especially women’s rights, saying, “I will protect a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body.” Drawing from her background as a prosecutor and vice president, Harris stressed her dedication to unifying the country and investing in the future.
Donald Trump, however, countered with harsh criticism of Harris’s tenure as vice president, questioning her accomplishments and leadership. “She’s had more than three years to fix the border and other issues, so why hasn’t she done it yet?” Trump argued, painting a grim picture of the current state of the nation.
Race became a focal point of the debate, with Harris accusing Trump of using divisive rhetoric, while Trump dismissed these claims. Both candidates also sparred on abortion rights, with Harris accusing Trump of planning to support a national abortion ban, which he denied.
With both candidates aiming to appeal to a deeply polarized electorate, the debate set the stage for the final push toward the 2024 election.
