Tragic Helicopter Crash in New York’s Hudson River Claims Six Lives, Including Three Children

Sightseeing flight ends in disaster; Spanish family and pilot among the deceased as FAA, NTSB probe begins

In a tragic aviation disaster, six people, including three children, lost their lives after a sightseeing helicopter crashed into New York’s Hudson River on Thursday afternoon. The Bell 206 helicopter, carrying a Spanish tourist family and the pilot, took off from the downtown Manhattan Skyport around 3:00 p.m. and was on a typical sightseeing route. It flew south past Manhattan, looped around the George Washington Bridge, and was on its return journey when it abruptly lost control and plummeted into the river near a Hoboken pier.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed the fatalities in a press conference, stating that although two passengers were initially pulled from the water alive and rushed to nearby hospitals, they unfortunately succumbed to their injuries. “All six victims have been removed from the water and pronounced deceased,” he said, calling the crash a deeply heartbreaking event. Eyewitnesses reported a harrowing scene, with one describing how the rotor blade appeared to disintegrate midair, causing the chopper to spiral out of control before slamming into the river.

Emergency responders from New York and New Jersey, including marine units, police, and fire departments, launched a swift rescue operation. Divers from the NYPD and FDNY retrieved the victims from the submerged wreckage, which was partially visible above the water’s surface. While four people were declared dead at the crash site, the remaining two died later at the hospital. The FAA and NTSB have begun a joint investigation to determine the cause of the crash. The wreckage remains under examination, with floatation devices seen on the surface to assist recovery efforts.
