Apple Issues Urgent Safety Warning for AirTags: Risks to Children Highlighted

Enhanced Warnings and Packaging Updates Aim to Prevent Battery Ingestion Hazards

Apple has introduced significant updates to its AirTag packaging and safety measures following concerns about the risks posed to children. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has mandated that Apple include explicit warnings on AirTag packaging and within the battery compartment to prevent accidental ingestion of its coin-cell batteries, which can cause severe harm or even death.

The move comes after the implementation of Reese’s Law, which requires safety labels and performance standards for products with button or coin batteries. Although Apple’s AirTags meet performance criteria for securing their lithium coin-cell batteries, units manufactured after the March 19, 2024 deadline did not initially comply with the on-product and on-box warning requirements. To address this, Apple has added a warning symbol to the AirTag’s battery compartment, updated its packaging, and introduced alerts in the Find My app to inform users about the dangers of button batteries during replacements.

Looking ahead, Apple is set to release its next-generation AirTag 2 later this year. Equipped with a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, the updated device promises significantly enhanced range and tracking capabilities, building on the technology introduced in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. These updates demonstrate Apple’s commitment to both safety and innovation, ensuring users can benefit from advanced technology without compromising on essential precautions.
