Tackling Spam and Enhancing Privacy
Historically, WhatsApp’s open messaging system has led to unwanted contact and spam issues, especially affecting vulnerable users. The new ‘Block Unknown Account Messages’ feature, currently in beta for Android version 2.24.17.24, addresses these concerns by allowing users to block messages from unknown contacts automatically. This feature, found in the Privacy settings under Advanced, is expected to improve user privacy and device performance by reducing spam volume.
Feature Status and Comparison with Competitors
While the feature is still in development, its introduction in beta testing signals progress towards a more secure messaging environment. Unlike Signal, which already restricts messages from unknown numbers, WhatsApp’s new feature aims to close this privacy gap. In addition to blocking unknown messages, WhatsApp is also introducing custom stickers and expanding sticker options through GIPHY, enhancing user personalization.
