On September 17, 2024, Jio users across India were hit by a significant network outage, affecting both mobile and internet services. The disruption began early in the morning, and by noon, more than 10,000 users had reported connectivity issues. The problems appeared to be most concentrated in Mumbai, but users in other major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Patna, and Kolkata were also affected. According to data from Downdetector, a platform that tracks service disruptions, there was a sudden surge in complaints by 12:08 PM, with 65% of users reporting a lack of signal, 19% facing difficulties with mobile internet, and 16% experiencing problems with Jio Fiber.
While other major telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL did not report similar issues, Jio users took to social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to voice their frustrations. The hashtag #JioDown quickly started trending, with users expressing their displeasure through complaints, along with lighthearted memes and jokes. Some speculated about possible causes, including a fire at a data center, though these claims were unconfirmed.
In response to the situation, Reliance Jio released an official statement acknowledging the outage, particularly for customers in Mumbai. The company cited minor technical issues as the cause but assured that the problems had been resolved, with services fully restored. They also issued an apology for the inconvenience caused to their subscribers. Despite the quick resolution, the incident led to widespread discussion online, underscoring the growing reliance on mobile and internet services in daily life.
