Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced a significant milestone for the company’s generative AI assistant—Meta AI—revealing that it is now being used over one billion times every month across Meta’s suite of apps. This major update was shared during Meta’s annual shareholders’ meeting and comes as tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI race to dominate the rapidly expanding AI landscape.
While Zuckerberg did not break down how much of this usage came from direct user engagement versus passive interactions—since Meta AI is embedded in various features across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—the growth is undeniable. In fact, Meta AI has seen its fastest adoption on WhatsApp, according to Meta CFO Susan Li.
To offer more personalized experiences, Meta recently launched a standalone Meta AI app on April 29. This new app allows users to directly interact with their personal AI assistant, primarily through voice-based conversations tailored to each user. Zuckerberg described the app as a tool that users can rely on for everyday tasks and personalized support.
Meanwhile, competitors are also seeing rapid growth. Google’s AI Overviews have reached 1.5 billion users, and its Gemini AI app boasts over 400 million monthly users. Despite concerns over misinformation and the lack of clear revenue models, the push for widespread AI adoption continues across the tech sector. Meta’s focus for the year remains clear: to enhance the user experience and establish Meta AI as the leading personal AI tool.
