Microsoft has officially announced the end of support for its dual-screen smartphone, the Surface Duo 2, following the release of a final Android security update. The company will cease updates for the device after October 21, 2024, marking the end of the Surface Duo 2’s brief lifecycle. Launched in October 2021, the device was initially promised three years of support but only received one major software update—Android 12L. This limited update cycle contrasts with Microsoft’s original Surface Duo, which received two OS updates, and falls short of the standard three major updates typically provided by other Android manufacturers.
The conclusion of the Surface Duo 2 underscores Microsoft’s ongoing struggles in the smartphone market. Despite prior attempts to establish a foothold with Windows Phone and Lumia devices, those efforts came to an end in 2017. This recent development is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to streamline its Surface product lineup, following the departure of Panos Panay, the former head of Windows and Surface.
Reflecting on these setbacks, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently acknowledged that exiting the mobile phone business was one of his most difficult decisions as CEO. He expressed regret over the missed opportunity to innovate within the mobile computing space. With the Surface Duo 2’s end, Microsoft’s mobile ambitions have effectively come to a close, raising questions about the company’s future in the smartphone industry.
