Kochi: Vijayadashami, the day dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and learning, is celebrated with great devotion across Kerala through the Vidyarambham ceremony. This sacred tradition marks the initiation of young children into the world of letters, signifying the start of their formal education. Temples across the state witnessed a large influx of devotees as thousands of children participated in this revered ritual.
One of the most prominent venues for the ceremony is the Panachikkadu Dakshina Mookambika Temple, where rituals began as early as 4 am. Temple authorities estimate that over 20,000 children will take part in the ceremony here, demonstrating the deep-rooted significance of Vidyarambham for families in Kerala.
During Vidyarambham, an elder guides the child in tracing their first letters on a tray of rice or sand, symbolizing the beginning of their educational journey. Additionally, a golden ring is used to write sacred words on the child’s tongue, believed to bestow blessings of wisdom and learning.
Popular temples hosting Vidyarambham ceremonies include Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple in Ernakulam, Dakshina Mookambika Temple in North Paravur, and Avanamcode Sree Saraswathi Temple in Nedumbassery. The celebration extends to temples across Kerala, with both large and small temples conducting rituals throughout the day.
