The Indian government is set to revolutionize its tax administration with the introduction of PAN 2.0, a next-generation PAN card system featuring QR codes for seamless data access and authentication. Approved by the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this ambitious initiative aligns with the country’s vision for a digitally empowered and efficient economy. Announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the project has a budget of ₹1,435 crore and aims to modernize the Income Tax Department’s operations.
Under the PAN 2.0 project, Permanent Account Numbers (PAN) and Tax Deduction and Collection Account Numbers (TAN) will be integrated into a unified portal. This advanced system will offer paperless, secure, and eco-friendly solutions, enabling faster and error-free services. The project will also introduce a centralized data vault, ensuring robust data protection and mandatory scaling of PAN data.
Key highlights of the upgrade include a common business identifier for streamlined compliance, improved grievance redressal, and cost optimization. The government plans to upgrade the existing 78 crore PAN cards, 98% of which have been issued to individuals, with QR code-enabled versions to enhance functionality.
This initiative promises to strengthen India’s tax ecosystem by leveraging cutting-edge technology to simplify processes, reduce manual errors, and foster sustainability. By bridging gaps in tax registration and compliance, PAN 2.0 marks a transformative step toward creating a tech-driven economy.
