Uncertain Future for Thrissur Pooram 2024 as Organizers Grapple with Exorbitant Ground Rent

The iconic Thrissur Pooram, a grand cultural event in Kerala, faces an uncertain future for 2024 due to a dispute over exorbitant ground rent demanded by the Cochin Devaswom Board (CDB). The organizers, Paramekkavu-Thiruvambadi Devaswom boards, revealed that the CDB has insisted on a staggering fee of Rs 2.20 crores, a significant increase from the Rs 42 lakhs paid last year for hosting the event at Thekkinkadu Maidan in Thrissur. Faced with this financial challenge, the Devaswom boards are contemplating scaling down the grandeur of Thrissur Pooram if a resolution is not reached. Despite interventions by top officials, including the Chief Minister, a solution to the rent dispute is yet to be found, raising concerns about the future of this cultural extravaganza.

Thrissur Pooram, with its vibrant processions, spectacular fireworks, and traditional music performances, has been a cultural spectacle attracting tourists and locals alike. The festival, rooted in Kerala’s rich tradition, has faced challenges in the past, including administrative tussles. The current rent dispute adds a new layer of uncertainty, as organizers weigh their options to ensure the continuity of this celebrated event that holds immense cultural and religious significance in the region.
