In a significant development, a third suspect, Sibi P O (25), has been arrested in Thrissur as part of an ongoing investigation into the trafficking of Malayalis into the Russian military. This follows the earlier arrests of Sandeep Thomas (40) and Sumesh Antony (40) by the Wadakkanchery Police.
According to police, the three men, all natives of Thrissur, orchestrated a scheme to lure youths from Kerala with promises of lucrative jobs in Russia. However, upon arrival, the victims were coerced into military service. Thrissur Rural SP confirmed that Sandeep, who had been living in Russia, acted as the main conspirator, using his network to recruit individuals under the guise of employment opportunities such as electricians and canteen workers. Sumesh served as an intermediary, facilitating recruitment efforts locally in Chalakudy.
The case came to light after complaints from the families of two victims. Joicy John, widow of Binil T B, who tragically died while serving in the Russian Military Support Service, and Kurian, father of Jayin Kurien, who was injured and is undergoing treatment in Moscow, reported the fraudulent scheme. Both victims, skilled ITI diploma holders, had traveled to Russia in April 2024 with hopes of securing civilian jobs but were instead forced into a conflict zone after their passports were confiscated.
The accused now face charges under the Emigration Act, human trafficking, and cheating. Authorities are continuing efforts to repatriate Jayin and recover Binil’s remains. This case underscores the dangers of fraudulent recruitment and the exploitation of vulnerable job seekers.
