The Kerala government has released the revised academic calendar for the new school year following the final directive from the High Court. As per the updated schedule, significant changes have been introduced to ensure the mandated instructional hours are met, particularly for high school and Upper Primary (UP) students.
For high school students, daily class hours will be extended by 30 minutes. Additionally, six Saturdays during the academic year will now function as regular working days to fulfill the target of 1,200 instructional hours. UP schools will also observe two additional working Saturdays, aimed at ensuring a minimum of 1,000 instructional hours annually. However, LP (Lower Primary) schools will not have any extra working Saturdays since they already meet the 800-hour requirement.
Importantly, the extra 30-minute sessions for high school students will not be conducted on Fridays. Authorities plan to organize the Saturday classes in such a way that students do not attend school for six consecutive working days in a week. This move is aimed at maintaining a balance between academic requirements and student well-being.
The changes come in accordance with recommendations made by an expert committee appointed by the government. The finalized calendar will also be communicated to the High Court, complying with the previous legal directions issued in this regard.
