In response to the devastating earthquakes that struck Myanmar, India is sending over 15 tonnes of relief supplies to support affected communities. Sources have confirmed that the humanitarian aid will be transported by an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-130J aircraft from Air Force Station Hindon.
The relief consignment includes a wide range of essential items, such as tents, sleeping bags, blankets, and ready-to-eat food packets, along with water purifiers, hygiene kits, solar lamps, and generator sets. Additionally, medical supplies such as antibiotics, paracetamol, syringes, gloves, and bandages have been included to assist those in need of urgent medical care.
Myanmar Hit by Multiple Earthquakes
Myanmar recently experienced a series of powerful tremors, including a massive 7.2-magnitude earthquake that caused widespread panic and structural damage. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday at 11:56 pm local time, at a depth of 10 km, raising concerns about potential aftershocks.
Earlier the same day, at 11:50 am, the country was shaken by a major 7.2-magnitude quake, which was felt in neighboring Thailand. The tremors prompted evacuations in Bangkok, where high-rise buildings swayed violently. Shortly after, a powerful 6.4-magnitude aftershock followed, along with a third tremor measuring 4.9 on the Richter Scale.
Infrastructure Damage and Casualties
The earthquakes resulted in severe structural damage across affected areas. One of the most alarming incidents was the collapse of a 30-storey skyscraper under construction in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, leaving at least 43 workers trapped under the debris, according to Thailand’s National Institute for Emergency Medicine.
Additionally, footage obtained by CNN from Myanmar showed a bridge spanning the Irrawaddy River in Mandalay collapsing into the water, sending plumes of dust and debris into the air. The full extent of casualties and damage is still being assessed as rescue operations continue.
