Thrissur: Renowned playback singer P Jayachandran, fondly known as the ‘Bhava Gayakan,’ has passed away, leaving a deep void in the world of Indian music. The 80-year-old maestro breathed his last at 7:54 PM yesterday while undergoing treatment for liver-related issues at Amala Hospital, Thrissur. Although discharged briefly, his health deteriorated, leading to his untimely demise at home. Despite prompt medical attention, he could not be saved. He was surrounded by his wife and children during his final moments.
Jayachandran’s mortal remains will be kept at his residence in Thrissur this morning before being moved to the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy for public homage until 12:30 PM. The funeral is scheduled for tomorrow at 3:30 PM at Chendamangalam Paliyath Cemetery in Paravur.
Born on March 3, 1944, in Ravipuram, Ernakulam, Jayachandran showcased his musical prowess from an early age, winning accolades for light music and Mridangam at the 1958 State School Kalolsavam. After graduating in Zoology from Christ College, Irinjalakuda, he initially worked in Madras but soon transitioned to music full-time, earning immense fame.
With a repertoire spanning over 15,000 songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi, Jayachandran was a force in Indian playback singing. He won numerous accolades, including a National Film Award and five Kerala State Film Awards. Memorable songs such as Onnini Shruthithazthi Paaduka Poonguyile and Smruthithan Chirakileri Njanen remain etched in the hearts of music lovers.
