Kochi: Businessman Boby Chemmanur, accused in a high-profile actor harassment case, has made the unusual decision to remain in jail despite being granted bail by the Kerala High Court. Chemmanur, who has been in judicial custody for six days, cited his solidarity with prisoners unable to secure their release due to procedural hurdles as the reason for his protest.
Chemmanur conveyed his stance to his legal team, stating that he would not leave prison until measures are taken to address the plight of such inmates. His decision left a large crowd of supporters gathered outside the Kakkanad district jail, hoping to welcome him, deeply disappointed.
Although his legal team arrived at the jail with the bail order, Chemmanur reportedly refused to comply with the requirements, including signing the bond necessary for his release. The High Court had issued the bail order at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, but the process could not be completed due to his resistance and time constraints. Jail authorities have noted that the lapse in the timeframe prevented the order’s execution, and prosecutors are expected to inform the High Court about this development.
The case originates from allegations made by actress Honey Rose, who accused Chemmanur of making derogatory remarks about her during an event. Her disclosure on social media triggered a wave of cyber abuse, leading to nearly two dozen arrests. Chemmanur’s stance, alongside the court’s earlier warning regarding his public statements, has drawn significant public attention.
