Thiruvananthapuram: The much-anticipated 29th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) commences today at the Nishagandhi Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram. The inaugural ceremony, set to begin at 6 PM, will be graced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who will officially launch the event. Minister Saji Cherian will preside over the function, with acclaimed actress Shabana Azmi as the special guest. A highlight of the evening will be the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui, accompanied by a cash prize of ₹10 lakh and a commemorative sculpture. The opening film, I’m Still Here, directed by renowned Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles, will set the stage for an unforgettable cinematic journey.
This year’s festival features 177 films from 68 countries, offering a diverse array of categories such as International Competition, Malayalam Cinema Today, Indian Cinema Now, World Cinema, Festival Favorites, and more. Highlights include a focus on Latin American cinema, The Female Gaze, and a special section dedicated to restored classics. Attendees can also participate in enriching activities like open forums, panel discussions, and the Aravindan Memorial Lecture.
With over 13,000 delegates and 100 filmmakers in attendance, IFFK ensures a seamless experience by offering a skip-the-line facility for senior citizens, free e-bus services for delegates, and 70% seat reservations in theaters. The festival, running until December 20, will culminate with the Chief Minister presenting the Spirit of Cinema Award to Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia. As IFFK celebrates its 29th edition, it continues to serve as a beacon for global cinema, uniting filmmakers and cinephiles under one roof.
