The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for five districts in Kerala—Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram—on Friday, predicting heavy rainfall ranging from 64.5 to 115.5 mm. This alert is effective until August 5, with heavy rain and thundershowers expected to persist across Kerala and Lakshadweep until August 7. Additionally, squally weather with wind speeds between 35 to 45 km/h, and gusts up to 55 km/h, is anticipated along the North Kerala coast.
In response to the adverse weather conditions, district authorities have declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges and tuition centers, in Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod. Palakkad district has also closed schools, anganwadis, tuition centers, and madrasas for the day, though colleges and residential schools like Navodaya will remain open. Schools running relief camps in Idukki and Ernakulam will also be closed for classes.
Authorities have advised fishermen to stay away from the sea due to the rough weather conditions.
