The International Cricket Council (ICC) is engaging in back-channel discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to finalize a hybrid model for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. With India unwilling to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns, ICC officials are emphasizing the importance of India’s participation, stating that a global tournament cannot be held without the Indian cricket team.
As per sources, India’s matches will be scheduled in the UAE under the hybrid model, while Pakistan will host games involving other teams. This approach, similar to the 2023 Asia Cup format, seeks to address India’s refusal to visit Pakistan. Discussions on the tournament schedule are underway, with an announcement expected soon.
The PCB has formally asked the ICC for clarification on India’s stance and is awaiting a response. PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf has urged stakeholders not to mix sports and politics, highlighting that all other teams have expressed readiness to travel to Pakistan. Ashraf maintains hope for a resolution, suggesting dialogue to address India’s concerns.
The standoff reflects the strained cricketing ties between India and Pakistan, who last played a bilateral series in 2012-13. Both nations now face each other primarily in ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup. With the Champions Trophy 2025 set to be a marquee event, resolving this impasse remains a priority for global cricket governance.
