Threads Introduces Tags Feature Globally for Enhanced Post Categorization and Community Focus

Threads, the Meta-owned platform designed to compete with Elon Musk’s X, is rolling out a new Tags feature globally. This feature, similar to hashtags on other social media platforms, allows users to tag topics in their posts. Instagram Head Adam Mosseri announced the global rollout in a Threads post, emphasizing its goal of enhancing post categorization and fostering a community-focused environment.

While similar to traditional hashtags, Threads’ Tags feature comes with distinctive changes. The “#” symbol is not displayed in the post, allowing users to tag multiple words with spaces between them. However, only one tag can be added per post. Mosseri explained that this approach aims to shift the focus of conversations toward communities and away from what he calls “engagement hacking.”

To use Tags on Threads, users can utilize the “#” key on their keyboards or the new # button in the post composer. This prompts a list of existing topics or the option to create a custom tag. Notably, the absence of the “#” symbol makes the tag appear in blue, resembling a link. Clicking on the tag allows users to explore other conversations on the same topic. Additionally, the feature supports the use of emojis within or as tags, adding a visually expressive element to the categorization process.
