In a significant relief for farmers and exporters, the Indian government has announced the removal of the 20% export duty on onions starting April 1, 2025. The decision comes amid a bumper rabi harvest and declining domestic prices, which have raised concerns among farmers about their income. Recent market data shows that the all-India weighted average modal price of onions has declined by 39%, while retail prices have fallen by 10% in the past month. The surplus supply from the rabi harvest has led to a sharp drop in farm gate prices, causing distress among farmers.
