Fortnite Set to Return to iOS in Europe Following Apple’s Compliance with Digital Markets Act

Epic Games has announced the much-anticipated return of Fortnite to iOS devices in Europe, following Apple’s obligation to open iOS to sideloaded apps and third-party app stores, in accordance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple is working on adapting its App Store and is expected to release a distinct version in Europe by March 7. This move opens the door for multiple app stores to become available in the region, with Epic Games potentially offering Fortnite to iPhone users after a four-year hiatus.

The official Epic Games Store handle confirmed Fortnite’s comeback to iOS in Europe, with the popular battle royale game being accessible through the Epic Games Store for iOS. While a specific launch date was not mentioned, the post indicated that more details would follow as the regulatory timeline unfolds. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney criticized Apple’s implementation of DMA regulations, labeling it as “malicious compliance” and asserting that Apple is imposing unnecessary fees on third-party app stores.

Sweeney emphasized the argument that a monopoly should not dictate which companies can compete with it, expressing concern over potential conflicts between Epic Games and Apple, especially with the latter retaining oversight of third-party apps. Fortnite was removed from the App Store in 2020 due to a dispute over in-app payments, leading to an antitrust lawsuit filed by Epic Games against Apple. Although the US Supreme Court recently denied hearing the dispute, Epic Games remains vigilant in challenging Apple’s practices.
